According to Access Atlanta, former NFL player Kordell Stewart has filed for divorce from Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Porsha Stewart. The couple was just shy of reaching the two year mark; they were married on May 21, 2011. Viewers may find the news surprising because Porsha Stewart just recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live where she adamantly denied reports of marital trouble.
The couple, who have been shown arguing on the latest season of the Bravo hit reality show, faced criticism after viewers questioned whether Kordell Stewart was too controlling of his younger wife. Their nine year age gap and inability to communicate respectfully on camera caused castmastes and viewers to question whether the couple would last.
Although they were married for less than two years, the divorce may be challenging because the couple supposedly do not have a prenuptial agreement. When questioned in a recent episode by castmaste Kandi Burruss whether she had a prenuptial agreement, Porsha indicated they did not create one because she intended to be married forever. In her blog, as reported by RadarOnline, Porsha shares her belief that marriage is a “sacred union between two people coming together as one with love being that foundation.” She writes, “this means I want to agree with my husband and have like minds” on all issues – including monetary and family issues. Porsha’s perspective on prenups? “There is no place for a piece of paper to stand between us.”
While the couple did not have children together, they will have to reach an agreement on other issues like property division and finances. Hopefully they will move forward using divorce mediation in order to reach an amicable and mutually satisfactory settlement agreement that will keep the details of their marriage away from the eyes of the public.
UPDATE: The day after her husband filed for divorce, Porsha Stewart shared the following on Twitter: “ A Marriage can last forever when two people decide to remain as one and conquer trials & tribulations together!” #teamstewarts #faith #RHOA
